When Junior Achievement 3DE student and aspiring pilot Daniel Augustus of Surrattsville High School took the stage at the 2025 Washington Business Hall of Fame last November, little did he know his speech would spark more than just admiration.
While introducing the honored Laureate and interim president of Howard University Dr. Wayne A.I. Fredrick, Daniel spoke with grace and authenticity to a room full of leaders and learners. Among the inspired audience were JA partners, Delta Air Lines and Airbus. As a result, Daniel’s voice, as well as his great ambitions, were truly heard.
Shalini Passales from Delta Air Lines shared, “Daniel spoke eloquently about his aspiration to fly since he was 11 years old. Airbus Director of Culture and Engagement, Seturah Foxx, and I said we wanted to connect to help make his dreams soar.”

This turned a powerful moment into a transformative one, as Daniel was invited to be featured alongside history-making leaders in aviation on Delta’s latest panel: Black Leaders in Aviation: Past, Present, & Future, which took place on February 25 in honor of Black History Month.
When asked about his reaction to the invitation, Daniel said, “It shows me that all my hard work did pay off and it was worth all the trouble.” He leaned into this incredible opportunity with excitement and gratitude, enthusiastic to share his story. The panel allowed Daniel to connect with potential mentors, role models, and supporters while diving deeper into the professional world of aviation.
JA played a key role in preparing Daniel for success. “Junior Achievement brought many opportunities to the table,” he explained, “like critical thinking, public speaking, reinforcing time management, and so much more.” His participation in one of JA’s 3DE schools allowed him to learn about our global economy, receive high quality, real world education, and break barriers.

Since he was little, Daniel felt a profound connection to aviation. From watching planes pass overhead to stepping into a Piper Cherokee 180 at age 11, his interest grew into a deep passion. He dreams of that calm feeling of flying above the clouds and having the whole world at his fingertips. One of the many notable things about Daniel is his commitment to dreaming big, stating, “I want to become one of the best commercial pilots out there, own a plane, and help other kids on their path to aviation.”
With Daniel passing the Federal Aviation Administration written exam, Junior Achievement and many others are proud to see Daniel’s goals taking flight. “I can’t wait to see him as a Delta Air Lines Captain,” Passales emphasized.
JA’s mission is to inspire and prepare young people to thrive in today’s global economy, setting them up for great success. Daniel’s story is a prime example of impact meeting action, where unassuming moments can turn into life-changing opportunities.
