American Gas: Playing House: Utilities join in a 3-D education effort on energy use at home

LANDOVER—An interactive 3-D house is part of a unique energy education effort sponsored by Washington Gas and Pepco Holdings Inc. to allow students to explore ways in which natural gas and electricity keep important appliances running, room by room.

The “YOU-tility Challenge” energy education experience, a storefront at JA Finance Park® Prince George’s County, also tests students’ knowledge of how houses are powered while providing tips for saving energy and money through a corresponding interactive touch-screen game. It is one of many storefronts at the Finance Park where students encounter everyday expenses from utilities to groceries that must be balanced on a budget.

“Helping students better understand energy and energy efficiency is absolutely in line with our calling as a company,” Jim Monroe, WGL’s director of corporate communications, told American Gas. “Washington Gas has been a part of the D.C. metro area for over 166 years, and we consistently look for new ways to promote education and inspiration in these communities.”

Washington Gas employees serve as volunteer teaching instructors. Monroe said the company is very supportive of Junior Achievement’s dedication to providing kids—the nation’s next generation of leaders—with the financial acumen they need to succeed.

Education is one of Washington Gas’ three community pillars, along with environment and health programs.
