MCPS NEWS: Thomas Edison HS Opens to Huge Crowd

Hundreds of parents, staff, students, elected officials and community members attended a grand opening and ribbon cutting for Thomas Edison High School of Technology’s new building on Wednesday, Oct. 10. The three-story, 171,526-square-foot building replaces the original one, which was built in 1982. The new building features flexible learning spaces, eight science laboratories, and state-of-the-art technology. The building is expected to receive minimum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) silver certification.

High school students at all MCPS schools have the option to apply for enrollment in one of Edison’s 18 career and technology programs. Students attend Edison every day for three class periods and earn 1.5 credits per semester. In addition to providing valuable professional certifications and licenses, students also may earn college credit.

The new Edison building also features the Junior Achievement Finance Park, a financial literacy program that will be offered to all Grade 7 students. Located on the fourth floor of the building, the Junior Achievement Finance Park experience begins with four weeks of classroom curriculum, culminating with a day at Finance Park, where students will be immersed in a reality-based, decision-making process that addresses budgeting, health care, investments, philanthropy and banking. The on-site activities allow students to execute what they learned in the classroom and provide a strong foundation to understand how to maintain a realistic personal budget.

Thomas Edison is located at 12501 Dalewood Dr. in Silver Spring.
